Firstly, I’m not the harbinger of doom and gloom at what is for most of us a very happy time of the year. But Christmas is also a stressful time. Stress on our minds, stress on our wallets and stress on our bodies too. Even if you have a car, the chances are you’ll be lugging around boxes of decorations, stretching into awkward positions to put them up (and take them down), carrying presents and that all-important food shop ready for the big day.
Injuring yourself just before Christmas will be a nightmare and probably ruin what should be a happy time so here are some simple pointers to avoid seasonal back care problems:
1: Decorations: Don’t stretch to put them up. This is not only intrinsically dangerous because muscles can easily be tweaked but it can also cause you to overbalance.
2: When putting up or removing decorations use a something stable to stand on like a freestanding ladder. A swivel chair is a definite no-no.
3: Carrying heavy objects: Don’t try to carry too much. It’s safer to make frequent trips carrying lighter loads and always cary the load as close to your body as possible.
4: Lifting heavy loads. If you have to carry a heavy load take particular when lifting it up and setting it down. This is when major problems can occur, so make sure to use your knees to take the strain, remembering not to bend your back.
OK, that’s the lecture over. I genuinely hope none of you fall foul of back problems over the festive period and that you have a healthy, enjoyable time with your family and friends.
