We have treated many women who have experienced back pain or other problems during pregnancy and most of them have reported significant relief from their symptoms. We have special pregnancy cushions that we use during treatment so our patients don’t have to worry about baby being pressed against a treatment table. But why do so many women experience pregnancy back pain? Don’t panic. It’s perfectly normal.
During pregnancy there are many strains exerted upon pelvic and abdominal muscles often causing postural problems. Aching backs are therefore not uncommon as the baby’s weight pulls the body forward. Also, the traumatic experience of the delivery process can have a massive impact on a person’s body. At the 3rd trimester a protein hormone is released called relaxin. Its purpose is to loosen the ligaments around the pelvis joints allowing it to widen in preparation for the birth. The downside is that this can remain for months after delivery, leaving joints vulnerable to strain. So there may be problems both pre-natal and post-natal.
Chiropractic treatment offers a safe, drug free alternative for the relief of discomfort during pregnancy and can ensure that your body and spine are functioning normally. This can result in less pain for the mother to be and more room for the developing baby so that both mother and baby experience less physical and emotional stress. Also, by reducing the stresses and strains on the joints and muscles, normal daily activities can be continued throughout the 9 months and many women find that labour is shorter and less painful.
This has been borne out by the U.S National Library of Medicine that reviewed various studies and concluded that chiropractic can indeed have beneficial effects for pregnant women and is “safe and effective”. You can see their conclusions here.
